The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts (formerly National Theatre) in Iganmu, Lagos is set to host the inaugural Lagos Contemporary Circus Festival, tagged Circus in Motion, from October 3 to 4, 2026.
The festival is being organised around the theme “Reimagining Nigerian Performance for the Global Stage” and will combine traditional West African acrobatics, folklore, music and storytelling with contemporary circus techniques.
Ahead of the festival, young Nigerian performers will participate in a two-week intensive training residency involving international circus practitioners.
Participants are expected from Ethiopia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Switzerland, including Fekat Circus of Ethiopia, SenCirk of Senegal, Ivoire Cirque Décalé of Côte d’Ivoire and Swiss performer Jessica Arpin.
The organisers say the programme is designed to contribute to the development of a sustainable performing arts industry while creating opportunities for Nigerian performers to engage with international practitioners.
