The Institute of African Studies and the Department of Theater Arts, University of Ibadan are collaborating with the family of the late renowned dramatist and actor, Chief Wale Ogunyemi to celebrate his life, works and times. The programme will run from December 15 to 17, 2026.
Aptly described as a community writer by the celebrated poet, Prof Niyi Osundare, Ogunyemi wrote several plays of varying themes, both historical and contemporary for the stage, radio and television. He passed on in December, 2001 at age 62.
The programme will open on December 15, 2026 with a commemorative exhibition of his books, photographs and paraphernalia of his practice to be hosted by the Institute of African Studies where he worked until his retirement.
It will also feature ENIYAN, one of his most philosophical plays which is rich in music and spectacle. The play is billed to run for the three nights (Dec. 15 to 17) in the Wole Soyinka Arts Theatre of the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Ibadan.
The second day (Dec. 16), will feature a panel of experts drawn from the academia and theatre practice to discuss his works. On the 17th, the family will host a Thanksgiving service and a reception to close the 3-day activities.
Ogunyemi was a creative genius who did not only dedicate his entire life to the theatre profession but remarkably left behind children who are graduates in the discipline to carry on his legacy. He was also a mentor to many of present day popular actors and actresses who have become household names in today’s bubbling Nollywood.
