Nollywood has set a new Guinness World Record after more than 51,000 people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, to watch the crime thriller Black Market in a single screening.

The record-breaking screening took place on Saturday, September 26, as thousands of movie lovers gathered at the Lagos venue for the premiere and world-record attempt.

Guinness World Records recognised more than 51,000 qualifying viewers, surpassing the previous record of 43,624 people set in 2015 during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.

The screening attracted movie lovers from different parts of Lagos, with large crowds arriving hours before the event. The gates opened at 2 p.m., followed by a red-carpet session, while the main screening was scheduled for the evening.

The event also featured music, food and games, while several Nigerian celebrities and public figures were present. Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat was among those reported to have attended the event.

Black Market was directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced by Nora Awolowo. The film features actors including Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini and Uzor Arukwe.

The film follows a group of women caught up in a cross-border smuggling operation amid economic difficulties, with the situation becoming more complicated following the kidnapping of one of their children.

The achievement has generated widespread attention within Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with the large turnout becoming part of the film’s story.

The Black Market screening has added another major milestone to Nollywood’s growing international profile, turning a movie premiere into a record-setting entertainment event in Lagos.
